Male masturbation

Male masturbation is often joked about and even taught in high school sex education. But, the classic form of male masturbation is essentially ingrained in your mind.

Regular masturbation has been linked to reduced prostate enlargement and prostate cancer rates.

There are a lot of positive reasons why you should masturbate more often:

  • Improved sleep quality and duration of sleep

  • The release of neurochemicals calms the stress hormone cortisol, to be reduced leading to less stress

  • Orgasms can help reduce pain in other parts of the body, such as soreness or headaches

  • It teaches you about your arousal process

  • It allows you to explore your fantasies safely and without judgment

With so many reasons to masturbate, why even leave the house?

Do all men masturbate?

There is a famous quote: “We know that more than seventy to eighty percent of women masturbate, and ninety percent of men masturbate, and the rest lie.” - Jocelyn Elders

Generally, it is safe to say that all men masturbate. At least at some point in their lives. Even men who identify as asexual may masturbate to relieve pent-up stress.

Especially during late teens through your early thirties, you've got a special concern. Wet dreams, or nocturnal emissions, happen for a number of reasons. Including if you're not masturbating to ejaculation enough.

A wet dream is when your body essentially forces you to ejaculate in your sleep. They are perfectly healthy, but washing your sheets so often can be tiresome.

Why is my husband masturbating?

People continue to masturbate once they enter relationships. It's a simple fact. Especially men, masturbation is an integral part of their health. Repressing it or asking them not to is a pretty unfair request.

Masturbating inside an intimate relationship isn't a "sign" of anything.

It isn't a "red flag."

It is simple self-indulgence. It allows a person to fully express their sexuality without fear of judgment or pleasing anyone else.

Think about it like this.

Self-care is a critical aspect of maintaining your mental wellbeing. So your favorite form of self-care is taking a bubble bath alone. Now imagine that you ask everything you take a bubble bath, your husband insists on sharing that tub with you.

In fact, if you try to take a bubble bath without him, that could ruin your entire relationship, and he'll move out.

Masturbation should be seen as an essential form of self-care regardless of relationship status. It's a healthy sexual expression, and it often leads couples to feel closer together. They feel safe communicating honestly, being themselves, and feel more satisfied within their relationship.

So, now that we've established that masturbation is healthy and a great form of self-care - let's shake things up a bit.

5 new ways to masturbate for men

As great as an old-fashioned tug-and-rub by yourself is, sometimes you want a little something more in the mix. There are many ways to shake up your masturbation routine that you maybe haven't tried yet.

These are sexologist-chosen and approved ways to alter and improve your masturbation routine:

1 - Add lubricant

While this sounds obvious, I don't mean that you should go out and grab the cheapest lube you can find. We recommend grabbing a few higher-end lubes with different bases. Such as oil-based or naturally-based, and seeing which feels best for you.

The best part about masturbation is that only your opinions matter, so you can choose whatever excites you.

Experimenting with different sensations is a great way to make your old technique seem new again. Try a cooling, warming, or even tingling sensation to inspire your orgasm to new heights. Just make sure you clean yourself off after.

If you’re pairing a masturbator with your masturbation practices, you’ll definitely want a lubricant to enhance the experience. I recommend trying the Fleshlube Elements Pack which features their classic water-based lubricant, a warming lube, and a cooling lube. That way, you can customize each self-care masturabtion experience!

The warming lubricant is especially ideal for those who want a more “lifelike” experience from their masturbator.

2 - Get a toy

It used to be that sex shops were wall-to-wall with vibrators for women. Those days are now long gone. Now, there are plenty of options for penis owners in sex shops. Going online, you'll notice many types of masturbators and pocket pussies available. Here are the most common types.

  • Strokers - These are inexpensive and practically disposable. They are characterized by not having any body part design base. They also have a hole at either end and are soft-sided. The advantages of these are that they're inexpensive, come in a wide variety, and are easy to clean. I think that the Arcwave Ghost is an excellent option for a stroker. It features reversible textures so you have plenty of variety while still adding plenty of spice to your masturbation routine. And at such a low price point, who can resist?

  • Cups and eggs - These may sound weird, but they're just little masturbating sleeves tucked away inside a plastic egg. These little silicone caps stretch out to about three times their appeared size and come in countless types of textures. For about $10 a piece, these are likely among the cheapest ways to shake up your masturbation routine. I have always been a huge advocate of Tenga products. They pioneered hte very first “egg” masturabator design and they’re still a fan favorite! You can check out their egg variety pack so you always have something new to choose from.

  • Pocket pussies - Pocket pussies are exactly as they sound, although I don't suggest putting them in your pocket. They're usually designed to look like a vulva, a mouth, or an anus at one end and are soft-sided. They come in all kinds of colors and with different textures inside. But beware, not all of these are created equal. Make sure to read our sex toy materials post before buying one of these toys. The benefits of these are they're inexpensive, there are tons of options, and they have a hole making cleaning and pressure control easy.

  • Fleshlights - While Fleshlight is a brand name, this is a term commonly used to talk about a pocket pussy in plastic housing. They often look like flashlights and offer a twist-top or a hole at the top to allow you to control the pressure inside. The downsides of these are that they're pretty expensive and a challenge to clean. But, if you take proper care of them, they can last you for years to come.  The company, Fleshlight, invented the original masturbator. They take immense pride in their products which are all non-toxic and phthalate-free, two crucial factors in my pleasure product approval process. If you’re looking for something to remind you of your favourite porn star, try the Lena the Plug Honey Combo. This has the masturbator but all the products you’ll need to maintain your Fleshlight for years to come! Alternatively, if you want something a little more masculine, try the DeAngelo Jackson or Reno Gold masturbator packs.

  • Automatic options - If the Fleshlight seems boring for you, you're still spoiled for choice. There are countless types of machine or app-powered masturbators on the market for you to choose from. Some sync up to pornography videos, some have endurance training settings, and some give you a blowjob. Buyer beware. Not all of them are cracked up to what they're supposed to be. Personally, I recommend the Arcwave Pow which allows you to have complete suction control for a personalized masturbation experience. It’s also a lot easier to clean than Fleshlight counterparts. Of course Tenga has brought even more to the plate with their Flip Zero EVR with Electronic Vibration and their Vacuum Gyro Roller both available in a convenient and affordable bundle! The Tenga products are designed with the user in mind and feature easy-to-clean designs so you can enjoy your masturbator every day. Of course, there is my highly rated F1SV2 by Lelo that I constantly rave about (even recommended it to my sister as a gift for her partner!) It is made entirely from body-safe silicone so it’s super easy to clean. But the benefits are far from over, the F1SV2 also has an app to help you endurance train so you can last longer in bed with a partner. Or, if your partner wants to help you out, there is also a game similar to Space Invaders (yes, the one from the arcades in the 80’s) to make masturbating a fun and sharable experience for you both!

Whatever you choose to shake up your routine, do your research. Many cut-rate companies make more affordable options on the market full of toxic and dangerous chemicals.

3 - Ditch the porn

Porn is a fantastic way to get your engines going. But, it can play tricks on your mind.

If you almost always or always use porn when you masturbate, consider giving it a break and going old school.

Our favorite ways to get erotic suggestions are erotic novels, erotic stories (plenty of apps and websites), and good old-fashioned fantasies.

Fantasies are an endless supply of inventive situations that could only be possible in your brain. So if you've always wanted to have an orgy on Mars, this is the way to make it happen right now.

4 - Treat it with love

Like all things self-care, if it's just part of your routine, some flairs can get lost. If you want to change your masturbation routine entirely, try taking your time instead of rushing through the experience.

As we discussed in our female pleasure article, make a day out of it. Take yourself on a date, clean your home and space, and draw out the pleasure-filled day or night (or both.)

By surrounding yourself with other sensory experiences, you can spark new kinds of erotic pleasure.

5 - Your body is an erotic canvas - incorporate pleasure mapping

Focusing only on your penis is such a waste. While you're likely to get where you're going quickly, incorporating your entire body will make for a much more pleasurable experience. Explore your body with Pleasure Mapping to find out what you like, where, and how you want to be touched.

Staring with your head, work your way down to your toes, figuring out precisely what you want in each place. Doing this will allow you to open your mind to new types of pleasure you may have never noticed before.

Once you've got your whole body into the mix, spend more time with your balls, your taint, and/or your prostate.

Your body is a nerve-ending minefield of pleasure. So bring your lube downstairs and slowly work from the balls back towards your anus.

You'll notice at the base of your penis you're especially sensitive. That's because your penis extends back into your body a few more centimeters than you are aware of. This area loves stimulation and is almost always ignored. Play there before massaging the testicles. Then move back towards the taint.

The perineum is a no butt-stuff pass to the prostate. That's right. You can have a prostate orgasm without going into your backdoor. Just feel backward from the base of your testicles towards your anus. You'll notice a slightly softer spot that feels amazing. Stimulate that area with rubbing, pressure, or even a vibrator. You can have an orgasm from here alone!

There is SO much to know about the prostate. But it is like a rabbit hole you'll never want to come out of. Check out my full article on the prostate to learn more.

“I would argue that masturbation is the human animal’s most important adaptation. the very cornerstone of our technological civilization.”
